Wellness Focus on Gratitude

The Soaring Hawk Wellness Team has been focusing on showing gratitude in our daily lives.  The 5th Grade Wellness Ambassadors conducted research and found numerous benefits to taking the time to show gratitude.  Showing gratitude leads to: increased positive feelings, more resilience when faced with challenges, increased self-control, increased self esteem and improved decision-making.  These are just a few of the benefits, which multiply when time is taken to write down feelings of gratitude.

The Wellness Team wanted to capitalize on these positive outcomes, and gave the school a challenge.  Students and staff members are encouraged to write gratitude slips and place them in the jars by the front office.  Each Friday, a grade level or area (Hawk's Nest) is randomly chosen, and a gratitude slip from that grade/area is randomly selected.  The gratitude slip is read aloud for the entire school to hear, and that student has the opportunity to display the Wellness Trophy in their classroom until the following Friday.

The Wellness Ambassadors just finished the first collection of gratitude slips.  They will be collecting data on the implementation of this initiative and look forward to seeing the jars fill up once again.  There are well over 100 slips for the first few months, and we look forward to adding to that for the remainder of the school year!

“Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.”
