Bonnie Apol - Physical Education

This is my 27th year of teaching elementary PE: 23 years in Colorado and 3 in Michigan where I grew up.  I attended Western Michigan University and played club volleyball and rugby. I am passionate about sports and fitness and love that I get to pass it along to another generation.  Outside of school I am very active in the volleyball community. I am the volunteer assistant coach for Castle View HS, play in the adult leagues in Denver and compete at USAV nationals every year. I also keep score for DU and some CU home matches and have worked for the beach volleyball world tour for 20 years.

You can also find me in the winter months in the mountains skiing & snowshoeing.  I truly love all that Colorado has to offer.

Flo Garcia - Music Education

Hi! I’m Flora Sanders and I am Soaring Hawk’s music teacher. I moved from Kansas to become part of the SHE team, and specialize in elementary music teaching and voices of all ages. The University of Kansas is my alma mater where I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education. Rock Chalk! This is my ninth year of teaching and I’m absolutely thrilled to be at SHE.

Ky Bishop - Discovery Den

Hello! My name is Ky Bishop and I am a Drama and Art teacher here at Soaring Hawk. I have a BFA in Illustration from The Academy of Art University and I am getting my Masters in Education at Western Colorado University with a concentration in Drama k-12! I am new to teaching in my own classroom, but I have been an Educational Assistant and Enrichment coordinator for many years! I am passionate about teaching kids about different forms of art and encouraging them to express themselves artistically! I love DCSD and along with teaching here at Soaring Hawk, I also coach JV Volleyball at Ponderosa High School! I look forward to seeing all students explore drama and art in the Discovery Den!

In Discovery Den, students will bring stories to life by combining the magic of performing arts, the power of literacy, the fun of movement, and the creativity of building with the problem-solving skills of STEM. Through reading and writing original scripts, designing and constructing sets or props, and using science and engineering concepts to make ideas work, students will collaborate to create performances that inspire and engage. This hands-on, minds-on class will encourage critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork while giving learners the tools to become confident storytellers, makers, and innovators.

Kat Whelan

My name is Kat, and I am very excited to be the brand-spanking-new Art Teacher at Soaring Hawk Elementary!

I went to CSU for Art Education for 3 years, but when my husband (then boyfriend) got a job in this area after college, I transferred to an online university, and graduated with a BS in Organizational Leadership.

My three incredible kids have been going to SHE for the last few years. Our family has appreciated the sense of community that we have gained as part of this school. We have made life-long friends, had the best teachers, and been grateful for the support we have received.

The last couple of years I have been trying to explore my artistic side, again. I have been art journaling, taking pottery classes, and collaging. When I heard that the beloved Ms. D was moving on to a position at another school, I jumped on the opportunity to earn my Alternative Teacher Licensure while teaching  at the school my kids go to, and we have come to love.

I’m already loving watching our kiddos get creative in the Art Classroom, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year holds!
