Welcome to Soaring Hawk Elementary!

Established in 2004, Soaring Hawk Elementary School (SHE) offers a high quality, student-centered kindergarten through sixth grade education. Our curriculum builds rigorous, equitable and inclusive learning options for all students. The Soaring Hawk staff has very high expectations of our students and creates opportunities for students to explore new concepts in a variety of ways. The SHE Habits of Character provide opportunities for students to show integrity and compassion while being resilient explorers, active learners and contributing citizens. The Soaring Hawk community truly cares about the whole child, addressing the strengths and passions that deserve equal attention in the development of all students.

March Project Cornerstone:
The Dot
The Dot.jpg

This month in your child's classroom, Project Cornerstone volunteers will read the book The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds. It is a story about a young girl named Vashti who is convinced that she can’t draw. Her teacher encourages her to try by saying “Just make a mark and see where it takes you.” Vashti makes a dot on the paper, she signs it, and her teacher frames it! This positive experience with a caring adult helps Vashti change her mud thoughts about drawing into clear thoughts. Her growth mindset leads to developing a new unexpected spark.

Goals of lesson:

Ø  Use a growth mindset to stand tall and bloom.

Ø  Learn to change mud thoughts into clear thoughts.

Ø  Empower students to provide support to their peers, family, and community.

Ø  Help students discover and explore their sparks.

Vashti’s story reminds us that youth will listen and participate when we initiate the conversation. Help students to bloom by doing the following:

Ø  Model using positive self-talk and turn mud thoughts into clear thoughts.

Ø  Use breathing techniques to help mud thoughts turn into clear thoughts.

Ø  Encourage students to try something new and you do it too! Learn a new skill (baking, dancing, knitting, throwing a Frisbee, exploring new places, etc.).

Ø  Have a student teach you and the class something new.

When you “catch” kids modeling positive behaviors...
